The final bell has rung - but apparently nobody went home.
Plaid? Pleated.
Shirt? Crisp-ish.
Tie? Questionably loosened.
Knee-highs? Present and accounted for.
Homework?
Absolutely not.
The sexy Schoolgirl costume is one of Halloween's most recognisable adult fancy-dress looks. But there's considerably more you can do with it than throwing on a plaid mini skirt, white shirt and hoping the costume gods take it from there.
We're talking polished Schoolgirl. Y2K attitude. Punky plaid. Dark Academia. Halloween mischief. Cute cardigans. Great hosiery. And shoes you can actually walk in.
One quick grown-up note before class begins: we're borrowing the visual language of Schoolgirl uniforms - not trying to look underage. This is a grown-up fancy dress, worn by grown-ups, styled for grown-ups.
Good.
Now that the paperwork has been filed...
Loosen the tie, straighten the pleats and put the homework away.
Schoolgirl is going after dark.
First: Choose Your School Girl
The beauty of this costume is that a handful of familiar pieces can create completely different looks depending on how you combine them.
The Classic School Girl
This is the instantly recognisable version.
Start with a pleated plaid skirt and fitted white button-down shirt or blouse.
Add a striped or coordinating tie, knee-high socks and Mary Janes or loafers.
A fitted cardigan or blazer can finish the look if you want another layer.
Keep everything relatively coordinated and you've got that polished Schoolgirl aesthetic straight away.
It's classic for a reason.
The Y2K School Girl
Now we're taking the uniform somewhere considerably more 2000s.
Try a mini pleated skirt with a cropped cardigan, fitted shirt or sweater vest.
Add chunky loafers, platform Mary Janes or clean trainers.
A little shoulder bag, hair clips, glossy lips and perhaps narrow sunglasses can push the whole thing further into Y2K territory.
This version is less library at lunchtime and more music video filmed suspiciously close to the library.
π
The Punky School Girl
Take the classic formula and mess with it.
Darker tartan.
Skinny tie.
Fitted shirt or tee.
Fishnets or ripped tights.
Chunky boots.
Leather-look jacket.
Silver jewellery.
Smokier makeup.
The trick is making the rebellious elements look deliberate rather than simply wearing the Classic Schoolgirl costume after it survived a particularly difficult washing machine.
The Dark Academia School Girl
If tiny skirts and bright tartan aren't your thing, this one is gorgeous.
Think burgundy, navy, chocolate, charcoal, cream and forest green.
Choose a longer pleated skirt or darker tartan and add a fitted knit, cardigan or sweater vest.
Finish with tights, loafers or ankle boots and a structured satchel-style bag.
It's moody, bookish and polished.
Possibly owns a first edition.
Definitely won't let you touch it.
The Spooky School Girl
It is Halloween, after all.
Start with the classic Schoolgirl ingredients, then make them slightly unsettling.
Dark tartan.
Laddered tights.
Messier tie.
Distressed shirt.
Chunky shoes.
Smudged eye makeup.
Perhaps slightly tousled hair and a battered-looking book or satchel.
You don't necessarily need litres of fake blood.
Sometimes an outfit that looks almost normal with a few eerie details is much more effective.
Apparently detention has taken a turn.
Plaid Is the Main Character - Let It Speak
Plaid has presence.
It doesn't need much assistance.
If you've chosen a bold tartan skirt, pair it with a simpler white, black or fitted knit top.
If you're matching your tie to the skirt, make sure the patterns coordinate.
If your plaid contains several colours, pull one of those colours into your cardigan, shoes or accessories.
What we don't necessarily need is:
Plaid skirt.
Plaid shirt.
Plaid jacket.
Plaid bag.
Plaid socks.
Plaid headband.
Congratulations.
You've become a picnic blanket with excellent legs.
π
Give the pattern some breathing room.
The Pleated Skirt Deserves Proper Styling
The pleated skirt is probably the defining piece of the classic sexy Schoolgirl costume.
Plaid is the obvious choice, but it isn't your only option.
A plain black, navy, grey or white tennis-style skirt can create exactly the right silhouette.
That's useful if you're building the costume from your wardrobe rather than buying a set.
And pay attention to the pleats.
Steam them properly if they've arrived folded into a costume packet looking like they've endured an international incident.
Check how the skirt sits at your natural waist.
Walk in it.
Sit in it.
Turn around.
And don't automatically assume shorter equals better.
A slightly longer pleated skirt that moves beautifully can look far more flattering than one you spend the entire night pulling down.
If fitted shorts underneath make you feel more comfortable, wear them.
Confidence is considerably sexier than conducting a skirt inspection every fourteen seconds.
The White Shirt Is Back - Again
At this point the humble white shirt deserves royalties from this series.
π
But Schoolgirl styling is different from Teacher.
Try a fitted short-sleeve blouse.
A cropped button-down.
A shirt tied at the waist.
A slightly oversized white shirt tucked into a fitted pleated mini.
Or layer a crisp shirt beneath a sweater vest or cardigan.
You can also skip white completely.
A fitted black blouse works beautifully for Punky Schoolgirl.
Cream suits Dark Academia.
Hot pink...
Well.
We know which department approved that.
The Tie Has Officially Stopped Taking School Seriously
A tie is a tiny addition that completely changes the costume.
Wear it neatly knotted for Classic Schoolgirl.
Loosen it slightly for a more relaxed after-dark look.
Try a skinny black tie for Punky Schoolgirl.
A striped tie gives you classic collegiate styling.
A ribbon or bow can soften the look.
And a hot-pink tie with an otherwise black-and-white outfit?
Lube Lady has entered the classroom.
Just make sure the tie works with the rest of your outfit.
And remember, loosened is a styling choice.
Hanging somewhere around your left elbow suggests the evening has progressed considerably.
π
The Sweater Vest Has Entered the Chat
Sweater vests have done something remarkable.
They've gone from something your grandfather might have worn to becoming genuinely useful fashion pieces again.
And they're brilliant for this costume.
White shirt + fitted sweater vest + pleate
